My MIL Called My Kids ‘Fake Grandkids’ Because They’re Adopted, But Karma Made Her Eat Her Words — Story of the Day

I spent $30,000 trying to become a mother.
When fertility treatments failed, my husband Andrew and I chose adoption.
We welcomed two children, Amara and Liam, who had already been through more than most adults could handle.
It wasn’t easy.
There were tantrums, tears, sleepless nights, and weeks before either of them called me “Mom.”
But we stayed.
Then we invited my mother-in-law, Gloria, to a small welcome party.
She arrived with two friends.
In front of everyone—and the children—she said:
“These are my fake grandchildren. I’m not leaving them a dime.”
Then she looked at me and added that if I’d had “my own children,” I wouldn’t be so desperate to pretend.
I told her to leave.
When Andrew came home and heard what happened, he backed me completely.
Months passed.
Amara and Liam slowly began trusting us. Our house finally sounded like a family.
Then, on Christmas morning, Gloria appeared at our door holding a card.
Her voice broke.
“I called them fake…and they were the only ones who remembered me.”
Amara and Liam had sent her the Christmas card themselves.
I opened the door wider.
“They’re decorating the tree. If you want to thank them, tell them yourself.”
The children Gloria once called fake ended up teaching her something very real about family.
