My MIL Offered to Watch Our Baby for Our First Night Out – Then the Hostess Said, ‘Your Other Guest Is Already Here’
My mother-in-law practically pushed us out the door for our first date night since our daughter was born.
“Go enjoy yourselves,” Monica insisted. “I’ll handle everything.”
Twenty minutes later, we arrived at the restaurant, only for the hostess to say, “Your other guests are already here.”
A couple stood up. It was Nathan’s old high school friend Chris and his wife.
“Your mom invited us,” Chris explained.
Neither of us knew anything about it.
Later, I checked the baby monitor.
Offline.
I called Monica repeatedly. No answer.
Panicking, I opened our security camera and saw an unfamiliar man carrying roses enter our house.
We rushed home.
Thankfully, our baby was sleeping safely upstairs.
But our bedroom was covered in rose petals, flowers, candles, and champagne.
Then we heard Monica downstairs with the stranger.
He turned out to be a florist she had secretly hired to create a romantic surprise.
Monica admitted she had turned off the baby monitor so we wouldn’t see him walking upstairs. She had also invited Chris to dinner to keep us distracted longer.
Her intentions were sweet, but we were furious.
We set firm rules: never disable the monitor, always answer the phone, and never bring strangers into our home without permission.
Monica apologized.
Sometimes helping exhausted new parents is simple:
Watch the baby.
Answer the phone.
And leave the surprises alone.
