The Secret Hidden Inside My Christmas Gift

Last Christmas, our office did a Secret Santa exchange.

My coworker, Jenna, drew my name and gave me a delicate silver ring with a small green stone.

It was nicer than anything I expected from a casual office gift.

I wore it often.

Almost a year later, I noticed a tiny groove around the stone.

Curious, I twisted it.

The top opened.

Inside was a tiny piece of folded paper.

Only two words were written on it:

“Keep going.”

I froze.

Years earlier, after my younger brother died, he had left me a note with those exact words.

I kept it in my wallet for months until it eventually fell apart.

I had never told anyone at work about it.

The next morning, I asked Jenna where she had found the ring.

She looked confused.

Then she explained that she had bought it at a small estate shop near her neighborhood.

The shop owner had mentioned that several pieces came from one family’s belongings.

Something clicked.

My brother had lived just a few blocks from that store before he died.

I contacted the owner and showed him a photo.

After checking old records, he confirmed the ring had come from a box donated by the woman who once rented the apartment below my brother.

I’ll never know exactly how the note ended up inside.

Maybe my brother owned the ring.

Maybe he hid the message for someone else.

Maybe it was just an impossible coincidence.

But I stopped caring about the explanation.

For nearly a year, I had unknowingly carried two words from my past on my hand.

And somehow, I found them exactly when I needed them again.
