The Night They Turned My Daughter Into a Babysitter

My ex-husband and his new wife had recently welcomed a baby boy.
My fifteen-year-old daughter, Ava, usually stayed with them every other weekend.
At first, she loved having a baby brother.
Then the expectations started changing.
She was asked to hold him while they cooked, watch him during showers, and stay nearby during naps.
I didn’t think much of it until one Friday night, Ava called me crying.
Her stepmother had told her she would be responsible for the baby overnight because they were both exhausted.
When Ava said she wasn’t comfortable, her stepmother snapped, “This house isn’t a free hotel. You need to contribute somehow.”
I wanted to drive over immediately.
Instead, I told Ava to stay calm and keep me on the phone.
The next morning, I contacted my attorney and reviewed our custody agreement.
Nothing in it required Ava to provide childcare.
Then I picked her up and told my ex she would be staying with me until we had a serious conversation about boundaries.
He was furious.
He accused me of turning Ava against them.
But when Ava finally spoke for herself, she said something that silenced everyone.
“I want to visit Dad. I don’t want to raise his baby.”
That was the difference.
Helping occasionally was one thing.
Being treated like unpaid overnight childcare was another.
We adjusted the schedule temporarily and made the expectations clear.
Ava still visited.
She still loved her baby brother.
But after that, nobody confused being a daughter with being a built-in nanny.
