Why My Daughter Wanted Him Gone

My stepson, Caleb, stayed with us every other weekend.
He was seventeen, quiet, and usually kept to himself.
So when my fourteen-year-old daughter, Lily, suddenly started asking me to stop letting him come over, I was confused.
She wouldn’t tell me why.
Every time I pushed, she just said, “Please trust me.”
I didn’t know what to think.
One Sunday, after Caleb left, I went into his room to change the sheets.
Near the bed was a pile of socks that looked oddly arranged.
When I moved them, I found an old phone hidden underneath.
It wasn’t the phone Caleb normally used.
I charged it.
The moment it turned on, messages started appearing.
Most were harmless.
Then I saw a conversation involving Lily.
Caleb had been using a fake account to message one of her friends, pretending to be another teenager.
At first it seemed like stupid online drama.
Then I realized he had been trying to get information about Lily—who she talked to, where she went after school, and whether she liked anyone.
I felt sick.
When I confronted Caleb, he admitted he had been jealous because Lily had become close with a boy he knew.
He insisted he never planned to hurt her.
That didn’t make it okay.
His father and I immediately changed the custody arrangement while we worked through what had happened.
More importantly, I apologized to Lily.
She finally told me she had recognized the fake account but was terrified Caleb would retaliate if she exposed him.
I had spent days asking why she wouldn’t explain.
The truth was simple.
She had been scared.
And from that point on, “Please trust me” became something I took much more seriously.
