What My Son Saw Under the Table

My father-in-law’s funeral was exhausting for everyone.

After the service, the family gathered at an elegant restaurant he had loved. There were relatives, business associates, old friends, and people I barely knew.

At one point, I stepped away to the restroom and asked my husband, Nathan, to keep an eye on our four-year-old son, Ben.

When I returned, Nathan was deep in conversation.

Ben was under one of the tables, giggling.

I scooped him up.

That was when he whispered, “Mommy, that lady had spiders under her dress.”

I smiled, assuming he had seen a pattern on someone’s clothing.

Then he pointed across the room.

A woman in a dark green dress was standing near the bar.

Ben leaned closer.

“I saw Daddy put them there.”

My stomach tightened.

I asked him what he meant.

He said Nathan had dropped something near the woman’s chair, then quickly picked it up and slipped it into her handbag.

I didn’t confront anyone.

Instead, I watched.

A few minutes later, the woman opened her purse, pulled out a small envelope, and quietly left the room.

Nathan followed shortly afterward.

That night, I asked him directly.

He finally admitted the woman had worked for his father for years.

Before his death, his father had left behind private documents he did not want discussed in front of the entire family. Nathan had been asked to pass them discreetly to her after the funeral.

There were no spiders.

Ben had seen the black binder clips holding the envelope closed.

For ten frightening minutes, my imagination had gone somewhere completely different.

And all because a four-year-old had described exactly what he saw—in the only words he knew.
