My 12-Year-Old Son Spent the Summer Mowing Lawns for Elderly Neighbors for Free – After His Last Job, Two Patrol Cars Pulled up Outside Our House, and What Happened Next Made My Hands Shake

I thought my 12-year-old son was simply spending his summer mowing lawns for elderly neighbors.

Then two police cars pulled up outside our house and asked for him by name.

My heart dropped.

The officers asked about Dorothy, an elderly woman whose yard Justin had been mowing. That morning, she had wandered several blocks from home, confused and unable to tell anyone where she lived.

Inside her kitchen, police found notes everywhere:

“Justin comes Tuesday.”

“Ask Justin about the mailbox.”

“Justin knows where the garden key is.”

That was when I learned how much my son had quietly been doing.

He brought in her trash cans, moved flowerpots, checked groceries, changed batteries, and helped her find things she’d misplaced.

Dorothy had been forgetting more and more, but she hid it because she feared her family would make her leave her home.

Eventually, she moved into a care facility.

Justin worried she wouldn’t remember him.

So he asked if we could take some of Dorothy’s favorite flowers and replant them outside her new room.

When we arrived, she stared at him blankly.

Then she noticed the gardening tools.

“You’re the lawn boy.”

Justin smiled.

“Justin.”

She touched the rosemary he’d planted beneath her window and whispered:

“Smells like home.”

Weeks later, Justin headed back with a watering can.

“I thought you retired,” I joked.

“From mowing,” he said. “Dorothy’s flowers still need water.”
