What I Misunderstood About Her From the First Date

I’ve been with Emily for a little over two years.

She’s funny, thoughtful, and one of the most caring people I’ve ever met.

But on our first date, something confused me.

We grabbed coffee, walked around downtown, and later picked up food to take back to her apartment.

Throughout the evening, Emily didn’t seem bothered by little things I normally noticed—touching door handles, setting her phone on public tables, or eating without constantly reaching for sanitizer.

I assumed she just wasn’t very particular about cleanliness.

Then we got to her apartment.

The moment the door closed, Emily placed the food on the counter and immediately started washing her hands.

Not casually.

She scrubbed them for several minutes.

Then she wiped down her phone, cleaned the counter, and changed her clothes before sitting down.

I remember thinking, What just happened?

As we kept dating, I noticed the pattern.

Outside the house, she seemed relaxed.

At home, everything had to feel perfectly clean.

I never pushed her about it.

Finally, almost two years later, I asked.

She went quiet.

Then she explained that she had grown up with a parent who constantly warned her that outside germs would make the family sick.

By high school, she had developed rituals she was embarrassed for anyone to see.

Years of therapy had helped her stop letting those fears control her life in public, but home was still where some old habits returned.

“I didn’t want you to think I was weird,” she said.

I reached across the table and took her hand.

The thing I had once mistaken for inconsistency was actually someone quietly fighting a battle I knew nothing about.
