Why My Wife Fired the Babysitter

For almost two years, seventeen-year-old Kayla had watched our two children whenever my wife, Lauren, and I worked late.

She was responsible, quiet, and the kids adored her.

One Saturday afternoon, she agreed to help us unexpectedly after our usual childcare plans fell through.

When I got home around six, Kayla was sitting outside crying.

Lauren was inside, shaking with anger.

“She’s done,” my wife said. “She is never watching our kids again.”

According to Lauren, she had arrived home and found our six-year-old daughter alone in the backyard while Kayla was inside on her phone.

Kayla admitted she had gone inside briefly, but insisted there was a reason.

Lauren refused to listen.

That night, after everyone calmed down, I checked the camera above our back door.

The footage surprised me.

Our daughter had fallen from the swing and scraped her knee. Kayla immediately carried her inside, cleaned the cut, and called Lauren twice.

Then our younger son started choking on a piece of apple.

Kayla rushed to him, helped clear his airway, and called me.

Neither of us had answered.

While Kayla was dealing with him, our daughter quietly opened the back door and wandered outside again.

Kayla noticed less than two minutes later and brought her back inside.

She hadn’t been ignoring the kids.

She had been handling two emergencies at once.

Lauren watched the video silently.

The next morning, she drove to Kayla’s house, apologized, and paid her for the entire evening.

Kayla eventually agreed to babysit again.

But after that day, both of us became much more careful about judging a situation before knowing the full story.
