My 8-Year-Old Son Started Sleeping Under His Newborn Sister’s Crib – When I Heard What He Was Whispering to Her at 2 AM, I Went Pale

My 8-year-old son Ben had begged for a sibling for years, so when his baby sister Brenda was born, he adored her immediately.

Brenda had Down syndrome, and while my husband and I were overwhelmed with doctors and appointments, Ben simply said, “She’s perfect.”

Then he started sleeping under her crib.

At first, I thought it was sweet. But every night, no matter how often we sent him back to bed, he returned.

One night around 2 A.M., I heard him whisper through the baby monitor:

“I won’t let Grandma do it again.”

My blood ran cold.

Ben finally told me that my mother-in-law had been sneaking into Brenda’s room at night and deliberately waking her—turning on lights, touching her, and making her cry before bringing her to us.

She wanted us to believe raising Brenda would be unbearable.

Worse, I later discovered she had contacted relatives and asked whether they would consider raising Brenda if we “couldn’t handle her.”

When confronted, she claimed she was only preparing us for reality.

Then Ben appeared in the doorway.

“But we wanted Brenda,” he said.

That ended everything.

My husband told his mother to leave, and we placed strict boundaries around any future contact.

Months later, Ben stopped acting like Brenda’s protector and became her brother again.

At her first birthday, someone asked what he had wished for before she was born.
