She Uninvited Me From the Baby Shower I Helped Plan

When my friend Melissa announced her pregnancy, I was thrilled for her.

She asked me to help organize the baby shower, so for weeks I handled decorations, vendor calls, party games, and half the food list. I even spent my own money on supplies because she promised we would sort everything out later.

Then, the evening before the shower, she sent me a message.

“Hey! So sorry, but we had to trim the guest list. I hope you understand.”

I read it twice.

After everything I had done, I wasn’t even invited.

I wanted to argue, but instead I replied, “No worries. Hope it goes well.”

The next morning, I dropped off the gift I had already purchased.

Inside the box was a beautiful baby blanket.

Underneath it was an envelope containing copies of every receipt for the decorations, food deposits, and supplies I had paid for.

The total was just over $900.

I included one short note:

“Since I’m no longer a guest, I assume I’m no longer your co-host either. Please reimburse the expenses by Friday.”

Melissa called within minutes.

She said I was being petty and ruining her special day.

Then her sister, who had no idea I’d been uninvited, learned what happened and confronted her.

By the end of the week, Melissa repaid every dollar.

Our friendship never really recovered.

I didn’t regret helping her.

I only regretted confusing being useful to someone with being valued by them.
