While waiting at a crowded clinic, Amanda found the only empty seat beside a little boy named Tyler, who looked about four years old.
For several minutes, Tyler kept glancing at her very pregnant belly.
Finally, curiosity won.
“Why is your tummy so big?” he asked.
His mother looked embarrassed and quickly apologized, but Amanda laughed.
“It’s okay,” she said. “There’s a baby growing inside me.”
Tyler’s eyes widened.
“Is it a good baby?”
Amanda smiled and gently rubbed her belly.
“Yes. A very good baby.”
The boy became strangely serious.
He stared at her stomach, looked back at her face, then frowned as if something simply didn’t make sense.
After several seconds, he finally asked, “Then why did you eat it?”
The waiting room went completely silent.
Then the receptionist started laughing. Tyler’s mother covered her face in embarrassment, while Amanda laughed so hard she had tears in her eyes.
Once everyone calmed down, Amanda explained that she hadn’t eaten the baby. She told him babies grow inside a special place in a mother’s body until they are ready to be born.
Tyler nodded thoughtfully.
A few minutes later, as Amanda stood to leave, he waved at her stomach.
“Bye, baby,” he said. “Don’t worry. I know she didn’t eat you now.”
The entire room burst into laughter again.
