For years, spouses weren’t invited to my husband Daniel’s company events. So when the New Year party finally allowed plus-ones, I was excited.
Daniel, however, told me he would be working late and probably wouldn’t attend.
Something felt wrong.
I found the invitation in his email, put on the required white outfit, and went alone.
At reception, I gave Daniel’s name.
The woman behind the desk frowned.
“Mr. Carter is already inside with his wife.”
My chest tightened.
Through the ballroom doors, I saw Daniel standing beside an elegant woman with his arm around her waist. A moment later, he kissed her cheek.
I was about to storm inside when the company president approached me.
“You must be Emma,” he said quietly.
I froze.
He explained that Daniel had introduced the other woman as his wife for nearly a year. Worse, she was the daughter of an investor whose family had helped Daniel secure a promotion.
The CEO had recently discovered inconsistencies and had already started investigating him.
The next morning, Daniel called repeatedly. By then, the company had suspended him after learning he had falsified expense reports and lied about several business trips.
He rushed home begging me not to “throw away twelve years.”
I simply placed my wedding ring on the table.
“You threw them away long before last night.”
I never got the dramatic revenge I imagined.
I didn’t need it.
Sometimes the truth arrives with consequences far more powerful than anything anger could plan.
