My ex-husband called me one evening with what he described as a “small favor.”
He wanted to pause child-support payments for several months because his new wife needed a new car.
“You have a good job,” he said. “You don’t really need the money.”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Child support paid for our son’s food, clothes, school expenses, and medical needs. It wasn’t extra money for me to spend.
Still, I stayed calm.
“Fine,” I said. “I’ll handle it.”
He sounded relieved, believing I had agreed.
The following week, I drove our son to his house for the weekend. Before leaving, I handed my ex a sealed envelope.
“Since you won’t be supporting him,” I said, “I’ve made another arrangement.”
Inside was a formal request to review custody and child support. I had also included proof of the vacation, expensive gifts, and car deposit he had recently paid for.
His face turned pale.
“You’re trying to take my son away!” he shouted.
“No,” I replied. “I’m asking the court to decide whether someone who prioritizes a luxury car over his child is meeting his responsibilities.”
He immediately called his lawyer.
Within two days, the full payment appeared in my account. He claimed the entire conversation had been a misunderstanding.
But it wasn’t.
He simply learned that supporting his child was an obligation—not a favor he could pause whenever something else seemed more important.
