My Husband Chose His Mother Over Our Unborn Baby

I was six months pregnant and exhausted when I asked my husband, James, to help me prepare the nursery. The crib was still in its box, the walls needed painting, and lifting anything heavy had become difficult for me.

James barely looked up from his phone.

“I can’t today,” he said. “I promised Mom I’d spend the afternoon with her.”

I reminded him that our baby would arrive soon and that I needed his support more than ever.

His expression immediately changed.

“You already know my mother comes before you,” he replied before walking out.

Less than an hour later, my mother-in-law called me. Her voice was smug.

“I won,” she said, then laughed and hung up.

Something inside me finally broke. This wasn’t a competition I had created, but James had allowed his mother to treat our marriage like one.

Our anniversary was the following week. James expected a romantic dinner and an expensive gift. Instead, I handed him an envelope.

Inside were temporary separation papers and a list of everything I had been handling alone throughout my pregnancy.

He stared at me in disbelief.

“You’re leaving over one argument?”

“No,” I answered calmly. “I’m leaving because you’ve shown me that our child and I will always come second.”

His mother arrived moments later, expecting to celebrate with him. When she saw my packed suitcase, her smile disappeared.

She had wanted to win.

But all she had won was a grown son who was suddenly alone—and finally forced to face the consequences of his choices.
