The Little Bear That Taught Me a Big Lesson

Three years ago, my ex-boyfriend gave me a teddy bear holding a bouquet in one paw and a little box in the other. I hated it.
I told him I would have preferred burgers over another dust-collecting stuffed animal. Not long after, we broke up, and the bear ended up forgotten on a shelf.
Recently, my nephew found it while playing and asked, “Why does the bear look like it’s waiting for someone?”
His innocent question stopped me in my tracks.
For the first time, I looked at the bear differently. I remembered my ex standing nervously at my door, holding it like it meant something. Back then, I focused on the gift itself and how impractical it seemed. I never considered the effort, thoughtfulness, or affection behind it.
As my nephew played, he asked another question: “Do you think the bear misses who gave it?”
I smiled. It wasn’t about missing a person. It was about realizing how much I had grown.
Years ago, I measured love by whether it arrived in the form I expected. Now I understand that people express care in different ways. Sometimes love comes wrapped in sentiment, awkwardness, and small gestures that don’t make sense until much later.
That evening, I placed the bear on my nightstand.
Not because I wanted the past back, but because it reminded me of something important: even relationships that end can teach us how to better recognize and appreciate love.
