The Day I Found My Future MIL Rifling Through My Clothes

I (28F) moved into my fiancé’s (30M) house last year. While the home is technically his, I’ve invested my time, money, and energy into making it feel like ours. I help pay the mortgage, cook, clean, and have worked hard to create a comfortable home together.

One afternoon, I came home early expecting a quiet break. Instead, I opened our bedroom door and froze.

Standing in our closet was my future mother-in-law.

She wasn’t cleaning or organizing. She was going through my clothes, moving hangers and handling my personal belongings. When I asked what she was doing, she claimed she was “checking to make sure I had enough hangers.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

Shaken, I confronted my fiancé, expecting him to be concerned. Instead, he casually revealed that his mother has a key to the house and sometimes “helps out.”

Helps out?

Since when does helping involve entering someone’s home unannounced and rummaging through their closet?

I explained that this felt like a major invasion of privacy and asked that boundaries be established. Rather than supporting me, my fiancé acted as though I was overreacting.

His mother didn’t apologize either. In fact, she told me I should be grateful she cares enough to tidy up.

Now I’m left questioning everything. Am I wrong for feeling violated, or is this a glaring boundary issue? Because to me, secretly entering our home and going through my belongings is completely unacceptable.
