We Spent All Our Money on Our Wedding and Got a Miserable Amount in Gifts, We’re Devastated and Freaking Out

My husband and I dreamed of having the perfect wedding, and we went all out to make it happen. Between the venue, food, decorations, photographer, and entertainment, we spent nearly $70,000. We worked overtime for months, drained our savings, and even borrowed $10,000 from our parents because we believed it would all be worth it.
We invited 300 guests, many of whom told us how excited they were to celebrate with us. Deep down, we assumed the gifts and envelopes would help us recover some of the money we spent. We weren’t expecting to make a profit—but we thought we’d at least get enough to breathe a little easier afterward.
The wedding itself was beautiful. Everyone danced, laughed, ate, and kept telling us it was “the wedding of the year.”
Then came the morning after.
We sat together opening every card, envelope, and gift bag, expecting to see enough to help us start paying off the debt.
Instead, after opening everything from 300 people, we had received barely $3,500 total.
Some guests gave nothing but cards. Others brought cheap household gifts we didn’t need. One person literally gave us a used candle holder.
I burst into tears. My husband got angry and started ranting that people had taken advantage of our hospitality.
Now we’re buried in debt, fighting constantly, and wondering if we destroyed our future trying to impress everyone for one single day.
