I THOUGHT MY SON WAS TOO YOUNG TO UNDERSTAND—UNTIL I SAW WHAT HE DID WHILE SHE SLEPT

When we brought baby Liora home, I worried about how my energetic three-year-old, Ezra, would adjust to sharing our attention. Initially, he was confused, treating her like a curiosity, asking if she’d return to the “doctor store.” We gave him space to adapt. One day, I found them asleep together, Ezra’s arm protectively over Liora, clutching a crumpled list he’d written: “Liora’s Needs: Food, Blankie, Sleep, A hug, Smile.” His misspelled words showed he’d been watching us care for her, taking on a protector’s role.

Ezra’s care deepened. He comforted Liora when she cried, hummed to her, and checked on her naps, once tearfully confessing at night he didn’t want her to feel sad. I reassured him that loving her was enough, even if he couldn’t fix everything. A shift came when Ezra argued with a friend, Mia, over feeding Liora correctly. I explained he couldn’t control everything but praised his care. He apologized, learning to trust others. Ezra’s empathy and growth taught me that love isn’t about perfection but presence and letting go, making me prouder than ever of my little protector.
