The Polite Objection: A Wedding to Remember

My dad asks why, and my stepbrother replies, “Because you promised we’d get a dog if you didn’t get married again!” The entire room bursts into laughter, including the bride, who can’t help but smile at his innocent logic. My dad, trying to keep a straight face, kneels down and whispers something to him. My stepbrother nods, lowers his hand, and the ceremony continues. Later, at the reception, I overhear my dad telling my new stepmom, “Looks like we’re getting a dog after all.” The day ends with cake, dancing, and a new family promise—one that makes my stepbrother the happiest kid in the room.
