At dinner, my daughter quietly slipped a folded note in front of me. “Pretend You’re Sick And Get Out Of Here,” it read.

When I unfolded the small, wrinkled note my daughter slipped into my hand, I never imagined five words would save my life: Pretend you’re sick and go home.

Sarah’s eyes were full of fear, and though I didn’t understand, I trusted her. Only later did I learn why.

That morning, my husband Richard—a man everyone thought was charming and successful—had invited his business partners for brunch. I’d spent the whole week preparing. But when Sarah pulled me into her room, pale and shaking, everything changed.

She told me she had overheard Richard on the phone the night before, calmly discussing how he planned to poison my tea during the brunch. He talked about insurance money, our house, and even “taking care” of her afterward. She had found documents about his debts, secret accounts, and a hidden bottle in his office.

We fled the house, terrified—but without proof, the police wouldn’t believe us. So we returned to get evidence. When Richard realized something was wrong, he locked us in Sarah’s room. We escaped out the window and ran.

With Sarah’s photos and the help of my lawyer, the truth finally came out. Richard was arrested for attempted murder—and later linked to the suspicious death of his previous wife.

Today, Sarah and I are rebuilding our lives. I still keep that note—five words that saved us both.
