A Stranger’s Gift

On a sunny morning, Red, my neighbor, accidentally ran over my daughter Andi’s beloved blue bike, leaving it mangled. Andi was heartbroken, her independence crushed under the tire. Red promised to replace it, but I knew he was struggling financially. To lift Andi’s spirits, we visited a sporting goods store, where she fell in love with a red cruiser bike with a wicker basket. It was perfect but pricey. As I hesitated, a worn-looking man named Walter approached, asking if Andi liked it. To my shock, he handed me money from his tattered wallet to buy it, saying he never had a bike as a kid and wanted Andi to have this joy. Despite his own homelessness and joblessness, his kindness stunned me.

Andi rode her new bike everywhere, but I couldn’t forget Walter. I found him later, learned his story—construction worker, injured, now homeless—and started bringing him coffee and food. After he faced a false theft accusation, Andi gave him a bicycle keychain for luck. I got him small jobs at my bakery, helping him regain stability. Months later, Walter gifted Andi a carved wooden box and, later, a new bike for her birthday. His initial act of generosity sparked a cycle of kindness, teaching Andi—and me—that the smallest gifts can transform lives.
