Barbara Eden, the iconic star of I Dream of Jeannie, celebrated her 92nd birthday on August 23, 2023, still captivating fans nearly 60 years after her debut as the wish-granting genie. Born during the Great Depression, Eden rose from poverty to fame, starting with roles in films like A Private’s Affair and TV shows like I Love Lucy. In 1960, she starred alongside Elvis Presley in Flaming Star, but it was her role as Jeannie from 1965 that made her a global star.
Despite her on-screen magic, Eden faced personal tragedy. Her son, Matthew Ansara, born in 1965 to her and actor Michael Ansara, struggled with drug addiction from age 10. His parents’ divorce at nine set him on a troubled path. Despite multiple rehab stints, Matthew battled heroin addiction, briefly finding stability with marriage and acting roles in films like To Protect and Serve. Tragically, in 2001, at 35, he died of an accidental heroin overdose, leaving Eden devastated. She reflects on his struggles, noting his inability to moderate and the pain of their divorce’s impact.
