My Wife Kept Making Us Miss Flights to Visit My Daughter — So This Time, I Boarded Without Her

My daughter, Emily, is 20 and attends college in another state.

My wife, Karen, is her stepmother. We’ve been married for four years.

Emily and I have always been close, but visiting her has become strangely difficult.

Every time we book a flight, Karen finds some reason to delay us.

Once, she couldn’t find her passport. Another time, she spent forty minutes shopping at the airport.

We missed two flights because of it.

Last Friday, we were traveling to see Emily for her birthday.

Our connecting flight had a short layover.

Despite my warnings, Karen insisted on stopping for coffee.

I went straight to the gate.

When boarding started, she still hadn’t returned.

I called her three times.

No answer.

So I boarded without her.

An hour later, she finally called.

“How could you leave your wife at the airport?”

I explained that I wasn’t missing another visit with my daughter.

Then she said something I hadn’t expected.

**”You always choose Emily over me. I thought eventually you’d get the message.”**

I went quiet.

She admitted she’d deliberately delayed some of our previous trips because she felt excluded.

I told her Emily wasn’t competing for my attention.

She was my daughter.

I spent the weekend with Emily and returned home Monday.

Karen and I had a long conversation about our marriage.

**I could understand feeling left out. But I couldn’t accept deliberately keeping me away from my child.**
