Grandma Gave Me the Same Birthday Gift for 17 Years — Then My Brother Showed Me What I’d Missed

My grandmother started giving me little plastic sheep when I was seven.
Every birthday, she’d hand me a small wrapped box. Inside was another sheep, almost identical to the previous one.
By the time I turned twenty-four, I had seventeen of them.
I always assumed Grandma simply forgot what she’d given me before. She was getting older, so I never mentioned it.
I just smiled and thanked her.
Last month, my brother came over and noticed the sheep lined up on my bookshelf.
He picked one up and looked underneath.
“Wait. You’ve never checked these?”
I shook my head.
He turned it over.
Written in tiny letters was a year and a message.
“Age 7 — You learned to ride your bike.”
I grabbed another.
“Age 11 — You helped me after my surgery.”
Every sheep had something different written underneath.
One mentioned my graduation. Another remembered the summer I stayed with her after Grandpa died.
The newest one said:
“Age 24 — You finally believe in yourself. I always did.”
I called Grandma immediately.
She laughed when I told her what I’d discovered.
“I wondered how long it would take you,” she said.
Then she explained that she’d started the tradition because she wanted me to have one happy memory from every year of my life.
I’d spent seventeen birthdays thinking she was forgetting.
The truth was, she’d been remembering everything.
