I Thought My Husband Gave Me a Cheap Anniversary Gift — Until I Found What He Hid Inside

For our tenth anniversary, I wanted to surprise my husband with something unforgettable.
He had talked for years about a particular watch, so I saved quietly and bought it for him.
When he opened the box, his face lit up.
Then he handed me my gift.
It was a small plastic bottle of perfume that looked like something from a discount store.
I tried to smile, but inside I felt crushed. After ten years together, I thought he would choose something more meaningful.
I put the bottle in a drawer and never used it.
Three weeks later, my husband died unexpectedly.
Everything changed overnight.
Months passed before I finally started sorting through his things. One afternoon, while cleaning the bedroom, the perfume bottle slipped from my hand and hit the floor.
The plastic cracked.
A tiny folded piece of paper fell out.
My hands began shaking as I opened it.
It was a note from him.
He had written that the perfume bottle was only part of the gift. Inside the note was a clue leading me to a small box hidden behind our wedding album.
I found it exactly where he said.
Inside was a delicate necklace engraved with our wedding date.
Underneath it was another note:
“I wanted you to find this when you least expected it.”
I sat on the floor crying.
What I had dismissed as a cheap gift became the last surprise he ever left me.
