My MIL Treated My Mom’s Country House like a Resort – I Taught Her No One Was There to Serve Her

My mother-in-law, Susan, spent nearly every weekend at my mom’s lake house being waited on.
Mom cooked breakfast and dinner, cleaned, changed towels, and even drove 40 minutes to buy special groceries Susan preferred.
Susan barely lifted a finger.
Then one Saturday, Mom proudly placed new geraniums along the deck.
Susan looked at them from her lounger and said, “These block my view. Don’t put them here again.”
And Mom actually moved them.
That was my breaking point.
The next morning, I woke up at 5:00 a.m. and made a chore board.
Daniel: breakfast cleanup.
Richard: groceries.
Me: lunch.
Susan: breakfast.
Beside Mom’s name, I wrote: “Enjoy your house.”
Susan was furious.
But as the day went on, something unexpected came out.
Susan explained that her own mother had once complained that everyone “helping” her made her feel useless. So Susan believed allowing Mom to host was actually respectful.
But Mom finally said what everyone needed to hear:
“I like taking care of people. I don’t like being taken for granted.”
Susan went quiet.
That evening, she cooked dinner and cleared the plates herself.
Before leaving Sunday, she apologized for the flowers.
The next weekend, Susan wrote her own name on the chore board:
“Saturday breakfast.”
And the geraniums?
They stayed exactly where Mom planted them.
