When Melissa turned 41, she expected something simple from her husband, Daniel.
Not jewelry. Not a vacation.
Maybe dinner, flowers, or even a handwritten card.
Instead, Daniel handed her a small gift bag before leaving for work.
Inside was a bottle of lavender shower gel.
Melissa just stared at it.
She hated lavender, and Daniel knew it. They had been married for twelve years.
Money wasn’t tight either, which somehow made the gift feel worse.
By lunchtime, disappointment had turned into anger. She opened the bottle, poured most of it down the sink, and tossed the container into the bathroom trash.
When Daniel came home that evening, he looked strangely excited.
“Did you use the whole thing?”
Melissa crossed her arms.
“I poured it out. Why?”
His smile disappeared.
“You did what?”
Then he hurried past her toward the bathroom.
Melissa followed, confused.
Daniel pulled the bottle from the trash, removed the cap, and reached inside with tweezers.
A tiny waterproof pouch was wedged beneath the plastic insert.
Inside was a folded note and a small key.
Melissa read the note twice.
Daniel had secretly rented a little lakeside cabin where they had spent their first anniversary. The key belonged to it, and he had planned a surprise weekend away.
The shower gel was only supposed to hide the clue.
Melissa started laughing through her tears.
“I thought you forgot everything about me.”
Daniel hugged her.
“I remembered enough to know you’d never actually use lavender.”
That made her laugh even harder.
