I was on a tight connection and counting every minute when a flight attendant leaned over and quietly asked, “Will you be rushing off the plane?”
I told her yes. Very much.
Then she said something strange: the captain wanted to speak with me after we landed.
I honestly thought it made no sense. Why me? Why not now?
She only said, “He asked to tell you in person.”
By the time we landed, I was anxious, annoyed, and completely confused. I waited near the front while everyone else got off. Then the captain stepped out of the cockpit, looked at me for a long second, and asked, “Is your mother’s name Elaine?”
My heart skipped.
It was.
He introduced himself as Daniel and told me he had served in the Air Force with my father over thirty years ago. My dad had died when I was little, and I barely remembered him. The captain said he recognized my last name on the passenger list and my face the moment I boarded.
Then he reached into his flight bag and pulled out an old photo.
It was my father—young, smiling, standing beside him.
I started crying right there in the aisle.
I almost missed my connection.
But for the first time in years, I felt like I had gotten a tiny piece of my dad back.
