I Pretended to Be the Daughter of an Elderly Man I Met by Chance – Days Later, His Lawyer Found Me and Said, ‘You Walked Straight Into His Trap’

After my mother died, I began volunteering at a hospice, where I met Nathan, a dying man with no visitors. One evening, he asked me to pretend to be his daughter because he had never known his own child.

For six weeks, we created a small family. I brought him coffee, completed crosswords beside his bed, and took him to his old diner and the ocean. Before dying, he asked whether he had been convincing as a father.

After his funeral, Nathan’s estate manager, Eric, revealed the truth: Nathan was my biological father.

He had found me through a genealogy database and deliberately entered the hospice where I volunteered. He feared I would reject him if I knew who he was, so he manipulated me into loving him first.

Eric had known everything. He was also Nathan’s son—my half-brother—and had helped keep the secret.

Nathan left us joint ownership of Millie’s Diner. At first, Eric wanted to sell it, but six employees depended on the business. After months of arguments and difficult conversations, we found a way to pay its debts and keep it open.

The diner later partnered with the hospice to provide free breakfasts for families.

Nathan had denied us honesty and the chance to confront him. But the love we experienced was still real.

In time, Eric and I stopped letting Nathan control our story and slowly built the family he had failed to give us.
