My Sister Demanded I Babysit Her Kids on a 10-Hour Flight — Her Tantrum at Boarding Was My Reward

I’ve changed diapers on road trips, calmed tantrums at weddings, and babysat more times than I can count. But on our flight to Rome, I finally said no.

A week before departure, my sister called and announced, “You’re watching the kids on the flight.” She didn’t ask. She expected me to handle her baby and five-year-old for ten hours so she could relax with her new boyfriend, James.

This wasn’t new. On our last vacation, she disappeared for two days while I managed tantrums, diapers, and chaos completely alone. So after she hung up, I called the airline and used my miles to upgrade to business class for only $50.

I didn’t tell her until we reached the crowded boarding gate.

“You’re selfish!” she shouted when I showed her my new seat.

“I told you I wasn’t your free nanny,” I replied before walking away.

In business class, I enjoyed champagne, a warm meal, a movie, and an uninterrupted nap. Two hours later, a flight attendant said my sister wanted me to swap seats or help with the baby.

“No, thank you,” I said. “I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be.”

At baggage claim, my exhausted sister asked if I felt guilty.

I adjusted my sunglasses, looked at her calmly, and smiled.

“No. For once, at last, I felt free.”
