I Chose My Wealthy Father Over My Struggling Mother—Then a Hidden Letter Changed Everything

When my parents divorced, I chose to live with my father. At twelve, his larger home, financial security, and comfortable lifestyle seemed like the obvious choice. My mother worked long hours and lived in a small room behind a grocery store. She never argued with my decision, only reminding me that her door would always be open. Over time, our relationship faded into occasional calls and brief visits.

On my fifteenth birthday, she gave me a handmade crocheted sweater. It looked simple and old-fashioned compared to the clothes I wanted, so I thanked her politely and tucked it away in a drawer, never wearing it. I didn’t realize the time, effort, and love she had poured into making it.

Years later, while sorting through old belongings, I found the sweater and planned to donate it. But before it left my house, my elderly neighbor discovered a hidden pocket sewn inside. There was an envelope with my name and a savings book.

In a letter, my mother explained that she had been secretly saving money for my future, contributing whatever she could despite her financial struggles. At the bank, I learned she had made deposits faithfully for more than a decade without missing a single contribution.

Standing there, I finally understood. I had confused wealth with love. The parent who had the least had sacrificed the most. Though I chose the easier life, my mother never stopped choosing me.
