I Told Him I Didn’t Want Kids—His ‘Solution’ Left Me Speechless

I grew up in poverty, wearing hand-me-down clothes and helping raise my younger siblings while my parents worked nonstop. As the oldest child, I became a second parent—babysitting, cooking, helping with homework, and sacrificing much of my own childhood.

Because of that experience, I decided long ago that I never wanted children. I’ve already lived through sleepless nights, constant responsibility, and putting my own life on hold. I don’t want to do it again.

Now, in my mid-20s, I live with my boyfriend. I love him, but there’s one major issue: he’s convinced I’ll eventually change my mind about having kids. Despite many honest conversations, he doesn’t seem to believe me.

Money is already tight, and adding a child would create financial and emotional stress neither of us is prepared for.

Then one day, he called me excitedly and announced he had a surprise—a puppy he adopted for me.

At first, I thought it was a sweet gesture. But then he explained that he wanted me to experience caring for something so I might reconsider having children.

That completely changed how I felt.

I’m not against puppies, but I’m uncomfortable with a living animal being used as a way to challenge a boundary I’ve clearly communicated for years.

Now I’m left wondering if this was simply a misguided attempt to help—or a sign that he doesn’t respect my choices at all.
