My 6-Year-Old Called Me and Said, ‘The Woman in the Living Room Says She Is My Real Mom’ – I Rushed Home, but Nothing Could Have Prepared Me for What I Walked Into

My Son Called Me Crying From the Bathroom — A Stranger Was in Our House Saying She Was His “Real Mother”
I was at work when my 8-year-old son whispered into the phone:
“Mommy… the woman in the living room says she’s my real mom.”
My blood ran cold.
My husband wasn’t answering his phone, and by the time I pulled into the driveway, I was already imagining the worst.
I ran inside to find my son hiding upstairs, shaking and crying. In our living room sat a soaked, exhausted woman staring at him like she’d found someone she’d lost forever.
Then she said the words that nearly destroyed me:
“That’s my son.”
I turned to my husband in horror.
But the truth was stranger — and sadder — than anything I imagined.
Leo explained he’d found the woman collapsed outside near our house. She was confused, crying, and begging to get to “her son.” He brought her inside for help while trying to contact authorities.
Moments later, she grabbed my son’s hand and told him she was his real mother.
Later at the hospital, her husband explained everything.
Years earlier, they had lost their baby boy during childbirth. Since then, she occasionally suffered episodes where seeing little boys around that age convinced her they were hers.
Before we left, her husband handed me a note from her apologizing for frightening my child.
That day taught me something painful:
Sometimes terror and heartbreak can exist in the same room at once.
