My Son From My First Marriage Has Contacted Me, but I Don’t Want to See Him

I married my ex-wife young—we had our son at 22. Over time, our marriage faded. By the time our son was 11, we hadn’t been close for years, and I decided to leave.

She was devastated. My son was furious.

To him, I was the one hurting his mother—and he shut me out completely. No matter how hard I tried—visits, gifts, showing up to his games—he rejected me. Eventually, he asked me to stop coming altogether.

So I did.

Losing him felt like losing a child who was still alive. It broke me. But over time, I rebuilt my life. I remarried, had two more children, and found peace again.

Then, years later, an email arrived.

It was from my son.

He apologized. He had a child of his own now, and said becoming a father made him reflect. He wanted to reconnect.

I read it… and felt nothing.

Since then, he’s sent many more emails, sharing his life, trying to reach me.

I haven’t responded.

Part of me thinks I owe him closure.

But another part wonders if silence is the only honest answer I have left.

Because sometimes, even when love once existed—

too much time, and too much pain, changes everything.
