The Call That Changed Everything While I Was in Labor

I was 8 months pregnant when my husband said he “needed space.” He packed a bag and left me sitting on the couch with swollen feet and a thousand unanswered questions. I cried for days, trying to understand how someone who once promised forever could walk away so easily.
Two weeks later, I went into early labor.
I was alone in my apartment, terrified and in pain, when suddenly my phone rang. I almost ignored it, thinking it might be him calling with another excuse. But when I answered, a calm voice said, “Hello… this is your husband’s boss.”
My heart froze.
He paused for a moment before continuing, his tone heavy. “I’m so sorry to tell you this, but your husband never left because he needed space. He found out something serious about his health and didn’t want you to go through it while pregnant.”
I couldn’t breathe. “What do you mean?”
“He collapsed at work this morning. The doctors discovered he’s been battling a severe heart condition for months. He didn’t tell anyone except me. He said he was afraid the stress would harm you and the baby.”
Tears blurred my vision.
“Before he was taken to the hospital,” the boss added softly, “he asked me to call you if anything happened… and to tell you he never stopped loving you.”
At that moment, between contractions, I realized the truth was far more complicated than abandonment.
