Every Night, I Noticed a Light Across the Courtyard — I Never Imagined It Would Change the Way I See Everything.

THE LIGHT THAT ANNOYED ME

Every night, like clockwork, my neighbor left his lights on—every single one. The kitchen, living room, hallway, even the lamp facing my bedroom window. It felt wasteful and unnecessary. I complained more than once, first politely, then less so. Electricity wasn’t free. Why keep an apartment glowing until dawn?

He never argued.
He never explained.
He simply nodded and kept the lights on.

Then one evening, the entire building lost power. Everything went dark—except his apartment.

Curious, I looked out the stairwell window. Inside, a soft golden glow flickered. Dozens of candles lit the room. My neighbor sat alone at his kitchen table, slowly winding a small mechanical clock. Beside it was a framed photograph he stared at quietly, the candlelight reflecting off the glass.

The next morning I mentioned the blackout to Mrs. Alvarez downstairs.

She sighed. “His wife passed away last year. She was sick for a long time and became afraid of the dark. He kept every light on so she’d never feel alone at night.”

After she died, he never turned them off.

“During blackouts,” she added gently, “he uses candles. He keeps his promise.”

That evening, when his apartment glowed again, I didn’t close my blinds. The light no longer annoyed me.

It looked like love refusing to go out.
