The Past He Never Let Go Of

I dated a boy in school, but when my parents moved me to another city, we slowly lost touch. Years passed, and I eventually returned to my hometown. A friend asked, “Do you want to see who your Mike married?” Of course I did.

We went to a grocery store—and there she was, his wife, working the register.

She looked at me closely and said, “You’re Olivia, right? I recognized you immediately. Mike has so many of your photos… and a whole bag of your letters. I’ve read them all. He keeps them safe. How long are you staying?”

I froze.

Embarrassed, I mumbled that I was leaving soon, just waiting for the bus. She said goodbye—with visible relief.

And just like that, I realized… some people move on, but never truly let go.
