I Had to Leave My Son’s Wedding — They Tried to Charge Me Extra for My Meal

I recently attended my son’s wedding, hoping to celebrate one of the happiest days of his life. I don’t know his wife very well since they live in another state, but from the start, there was tension—especially when she mocked me for being vegan. I chose to ignore it for his sake.
At the reception, I sat at a table labeled for a “vegan option.” When the food arrived, I was shocked—the vegetables looked spoiled. I asked for a simple salad, only to be told I’d have to pay extra because only one vegetarian meal had been reserved. I felt humiliated and unwelcome.
I stood up to leave, but my son stopped me and said, “You’ll regret this, Mom. If you leave now, just forget us.” That broke me. I told him I came for him, but I wouldn’t stay where I was mocked and treated with such disrespect. Then I left.
Days later, my daughter-in-law called, blaming me for ruining the reception and expecting an apology. I told her she had been disrespectful from the beginning.
Now it’s been two weeks, and my son hasn’t reached out. I don’t want to lose him—but I also can’t ignore how I was treated.
Was I wrong for walking away, or was it the only way to stand up for myself?
