I Refuse to Sleep Under the Same Roof as My Stepson — My Daughter’s Safety Comes First

I live with my husband, my daughter, and my stepson. After we got married, my daughter became quiet and withdrawn. She insisted nothing was wrong, but I knew something wasn’t right.

One night, I overheard my stepson in her room saying, “I’ll take whatever I want, like always. You’re not going anywhere.” I was stunned. It turned out he had been mocking and belittling her for months.

I was ready to kick him out immediately, but my husband stopped me, saying I couldn’t just do that. I was furious and told him if he wouldn’t protect her, I would — even if that meant leaving with my daughter.

That finally pushed him to confront his son that same night. My daughter seemed relieved afterward, but I’m still uneasy. I’m not convinced this behavior will stop.

I want to make sure my daughter feels safe and supported in her own home, but I’m unsure what the next step should be. Has anyone dealt with something like this, and what actually helped put a stop to it?
