I Refuse to Cook Lunch for My Husband’s Family Every Sunday, So I Set the Perfect Trap

I’m 26, my husband is 27, and we’ve been married for two years. Four months ago, we moved into a spacious home, mostly funded by his parents, who loaned us 80% of the cost. Since then, his entire family—eight people—has come over every Sunday for lunch. I cook everything, clean up afterward, and not once has anyone offered to help.

Recently, I told my husband I was exhausted and couldn’t keep doing this alone. He brushed me off, saying, “They helped us buy the house—this is your thank you?” I was stunned and felt completely unheard.

That Sunday, I smiled, cooked their favorite meal, and acted like everything was fine. But after they finished eating, I told them the kitchen was their responsibility to clean. When they walked in, they were shocked. I had created a complete mess—food, flour, sauces everywhere. It looked like chaos.

I told them, “If this house feels like yours, then cleaning it is on you too.” Then I grabbed my bags and left, telling my husband I needed space.

Later, he called me furious, saying I embarrassed him. But honestly, I felt pushed to my limit. I just wanted him to understand how unfair this has been—because nothing else was getting through to him.
