I Was Denied My Days Off, So I Beat HR at Their Own Game

I worked three years straight without a single day off, so I finally requested my full 90 days of leave. HR shut it down immediately, calling me “lazy” and saying I should find another job if I wanted that much time away—especially during their busiest season.

Instead of arguing, I calmly replied, “Fine, I’ll just work two days a week until the end of the year.” They laughed, assuming I’d back down.

What they didn’t know was that I had already started applying elsewhere. My plan was to use my accumulated leave to attend interviews, then resign right when December—our busiest time—hit. No notice, no guilt.

But now I’m questioning myself. Am I being petty for wanting to leave like this, or is it wrong for a company to deny someone basic rest after years of nonstop work?

Here’s the reality: this isn’t just about vacation—it’s about respect and control. You earned that time. Being called lazy for asking for it is a major red flag.

If you decide to leave, do it smart. Secure another job first, keep things professional, and walk away on your terms. Revenge might feel satisfying, but a better opportunity and peace of mind are the real wins.
