I Won’t Hand Over a Dime to My Late Husband’s Secret Child

Almost four years after my husband passed away, leaving me to raise our 8-year-old son alone, I’ve learned things about him that make me question the man I thought I knew.

About six weeks ago, a process server came to my door trying to serve my late husband with court papers for a DNA test involving another child. I showed him the death certificate and sent him away.

Not long after, a woman appeared claiming her child was his. I was stunned. I never imagined he could have betrayed me like that. The child does resemble him a bit, but the timeline barely makes sense.

She later returned waving a DNA test and demanded a share of his “estate.” I couldn’t help but laugh and told her the truth: my husband had nothing. Half of nothing is still nothing.

What she didn’t understand is that the only real asset we had—a rental property his parents gave us—was owned jointly with survivorship rights. When he died, it legally became mine.

I’ve already sold it, and that money will help send my son to college.

I do feel sorry for the other child, but my responsibility is to my own. Legally and morally, my priority is securing my son’s future—not fixing the mistakes my husband may have made.
