I Helped My Pregnant Coworker When No One Else Would — Then HR Called Me In and Said Something I Never Expected

My pregnant coworker Amy was pushing herself way too hard. She kept picking up extra shifts, skipping breaks, and one afternoon she nearly fainted in the hallway. Everyone saw it happen… but no one stepped in.
I couldn’t just stand there.
From that day on, I started helping where I could. I covered a few of her tasks, brought her lunch when she forgot to eat, and carried the heavy boxes she insisted on moving herself. Some coworkers stared like it was strange, but I didn’t care. She looked exhausted, and I figured anyone would want help in that situation.
Then Monday came, and something felt… off.
Amy walked into work like usual, but her stomach looked completely flat. No baby bump at all. She avoided me the entire day. Every time I tried to ask if she was okay, she turned away or suddenly found something else to do.
By the afternoon my anxiety was through the roof.
Then HR called me into their office.
My heart dropped. I thought maybe someone had complained about me interfering with her work.
But when I sat down, the HR manager looked at me and said, “We need to talk about Amy… and what you did.”
I froze.
Then she continued, “Amy actually wasn’t pregnant. She had been faking it for months. But your actions stood out. You were the only person who treated her with real kindness.”
Apparently, the whole thing had started as part of an internal workplace behavior study.
And somehow… I was the only one who passed.
