I Gave a Woman $6 to Help Pay for Baby Formula – the Next Day, My Manager Called Me over the Intercom and Handed Me an Envelope

I’m Laura, 40, a grocery store cashier. Late one night, just before closing, a tired mom came through my lane with only the basics—milk, bread, eggs, and baby formula. When I told her the total, she came up six dollars short and asked me to remove the formula. The way she looked at it broke my heart.
I reached into my apron and covered the difference. Six dollars felt like nothing. She thanked me with tears in her eyes and left. I forgot about it by the time I went to bed.
The next morning, my manager called me into his office. My heart dropped when he showed me the security footage—but instead of scolding me, he handed me an envelope with my name on it. The woman had come back.
Inside was a letter thanking me—not just for the money, but for treating her with kindness instead of shame. Then the letter took a turn. She explained she was adopted and had recently searched for her biological family. In the records, she found my name… and our mother’s name. The same mother I’d grown up with, who once told me she’d given up a baby before me.
The woman was my sister.
I called the number she left. We met the next day. Weeks later, a DNA test confirmed it—we were siblings. Now she and her baby are part of my life.
All because one night, someone was six dollars short at my register.
