Doctors separated conjoined twins who were joined at the chest: here’s what they look like 3 years later

In Northern Ireland, the Bateson family endured years of fertility struggles before conceiving twin girls. Joy turned to shock upon discovering the babies were conjoined, fused from chest to pelvis, sharing a liver, intestines, bladder, and one leg. Ultrasounds revealed two beating hearts in unison; separation seemed uncertain.

Born in March 2022 at University College Hospital in London, Annabelle and Isabelle were rushed to a top children’s hospital. Over 30 specialists prepared for months, using 3D-printed models and virtual simulations to map shared organs and vessels.

In September 2022, an 18-hour surgery succeeded: the twins were separated, each stable on her own table. Recovery involved intensive care, multiple surgeries, and nearly 20 procedures total. The girls showed incredible resilience.

Today, Annabelle and Isabelle thrive. Outgoing Annabelle loves singing; determined Isabelle bursts with energy. They attend physiotherapy, use orthotic supports, and await prosthetic limbs. Their parents cherish every milestone as a gift. This journey of love, perseverance, and hope continues, inspiring all.
