Grandpa Gave Me a Green Plastic Soldier on My Birthday for Years —
One Day I Finally Understood Why, and I Was Utterly Stunned

From ages 8 to 26, Grandpa Henry gave me a single green plastic soldier every birthday, wrapped in newspaper, no explanation. I displayed them politely on a shelf. After Grandpa’s death, my sister Emma noticed numbers and letters (“N,” “E”) on their bases—coordinates pointing to a forest near our hometown.
Curious, I followed the trail to a cottage where Walter, Grandpa’s friend, handed me keys to an ivy-covered hideaway filled with puzzles: ciphers, riddles, locked drawers, and crosswords. Solving them uncovered photos, recordings, and letters revealing Grandpa’s memories and wit. A cassette played his voice: “Congrats, kiddo. You solved my favorite mystery.” The final drawer held a letter: “This is yours now. Let others play.”
Inspired, I quit my job, moved home, and, with Walter’s help, transformed the cottage into “The Soldier’s Trail,” an escape room based on Grandpa’s designs. On opening day, I placed the first green soldier at the front desk, and each year, I add another.
The soldiers, once a quirky gift, became a map to Grandpa’s heart—a legacy of mystery and magic I now share with others.
