A blue vest, leash, or harness usually indicates a service dog, trained to assist people with disabilities, like guiding the visually impaired, alerting to seizures, or supporting those with PTSD. These dogs are working, not pets, so avoid petting, talking, or distracting them, as it could risk their handler’s safety.
Blue can also mark therapy dogs, which provide comfort in places like hospitals or schools. They’re approachable but always ask the handler before interacting. Puppies or young dogs in blue vests labeled “In Training” are learning to become service dogs and need space to focus.
Colors communicate in the dog world: red means do not approach, yellow signals a nervous dog, green indicates friendliness, and blue suggests a working or training dog. While not universal, these colors are widely recognized.
