Our Granddaughter Accused Us of Being Cheap after Getting Our Wedding Present

My husband and I gifted our granddaughter Eloise an air fryer from her wedding registry, as per our tradition of giving a small gift plus a secret $40,000 check the day before the wedding. Eloise called us, furious, accusing us of being cheap.

Shocked by her disrespect, we revealed the cash gift plan, but she didn’t believe us and hung up. We then gave her a China set instead of the money. Later, after learning her cousins got $40,000, she accused us of discrimination. We explained her reaction cost her the gift, stressing respect over materialism. Eloise, unapologetic, threatened to boycott Christmas and pleaded for the money, but we stood firm.

Despite her mother’s support, we believe our decision was fair, given her entitlement and our prior support—paying for her college while her parents funded grad school and half her wedding. We hope she’ll reflect and reconcile, but we’re at peace with our choice.
